New Offering for Seasonal Outdoor Professionals: Shifting Seasonal Sleep
A shifting seasons package for outdoor professionals in transition
Transitions are Hard on Seasonal Professionals
I have been an outdoor backcountry guide for more than half of my adult life.
Transitioning in and out from backcountry work into frontcountry work often felt like a fun game and challenge when I was in my early twenties—waking up on the sandy beach of Otter Bar one morning to find myself in class at University of Montana later the next day felt hilariously thrilling. However, the older I get, the more these transitions take a toll on my brain, my heart, and most definitely my body. Over the years, and throughout my time as a psychology researcher, I’ve thought long and hard about what makes these transitions more supportive, or more chaotic.
With some loving attention to detail, this four-series package has been created directly for those who shift in and out of seasonal work on a regular basis. Whether you’re in a period of life where you’re switching from your “on” season to your “off” season, or you’re gearing up for your busiest time of year—this series is designed to help you transition from one seasonal work mode into another.
What Is Included in Shifting Seasonal Sleep?
If you attended my talk at this springs 2024 Redside Rendezvous, you’ll know that I think of sleep as a slow-to-form vital sign that helps us understand how our nervous system is functioning and how our bodies are coping with stress more globally. This package deal is intended to triage some of the most important parts of our seasonal shifting with an emphasis on sleep, nervous system health, and markers of stress.
4-Sessions of Seasonal Shift
Shifting Seasonal Sleep is a program which includes a series of four, 1-hour, 1:1 sessions that are conducted over zoom.1 Each session will be looking at a different aspect of sleep, nervous system functioning, and markers of stress. Additionally Shifting Seasonal Sleep will be setting intentional directions towards where you’d like to shift into more ideal and more supportive states of nervous system and stress functioning while focusing specifically on sleep health.
Session 1 - Reviewing the Past Season
Before we can point ourselves on the trajectory of where we would like to go, we first need to assess what went well in our last season, versus what feels like it still might be carrying over some unpleasant effects into our current moment. Session 1 is all about doing a targeted review of the previous season and identifying key supports and strains on our nervous systems, sleep, and stress.
Session 2 - Sleep Health Inventory
After we review what the successes and pitfalls of our previous season were, it’s important to take a look at our sleep health trends over a longer period of time to get an idea about where we can make realistic sleep, stress, and nervous system goals. Session 2 is focused on reviewing a more birds eye view of how our bodies typically respond to sleep and stress. We will go over some personalized psycho-education on various sleep, stress, and nervous system trends to help bolster your agency moving forward.
Session 3 - Setting the Course for the Upcoming Season
Once we review the previous season, understand how our bodies have historically navigated sleep and stress, we can then set ourselves up for focusing on how we’d like to show up to our transition time, or our next season ahead. In Session 3, together we will set goals and talk about evidence-based tactics for setting up good sleep and stress habits. We will also cover methods for checking and balancing our approach as it changes over time.
Session 4 - Sending You Out of the Seasonal Nest
On our last session we will spend time reviewing anything more in depth that we weren’t able to cover deeply in our first three sessions together. We will spend the majority of Session 4 reviewing what you’ve noticed about your current sleep and health patterns since Session 3 and talk about how to make evidence habit tweaks based around what your current nervous system, sleep, and stress might benefit from. We will also cover important bench-marks on how to connect to more robust levels of care (if needed), important parts of the season to check in with yourself, and how to know when it is time to shift into transition for the next big change of the year.
Pricing & Accessibility
As someone who has been making these transitions at least twice a year for my entire adult life—I know that sometimes I’ve navigated seasonal transitions well, with no real need of support. While other times, I’ve felt like every step forward was only setting me fifteen steps back. I also know that at times, quality health and stress support can be expensive, and my financial resources have not always been able to access the resources that would have made a difference.
It’s on that note that I say, although these prices are discounted for outdoor professionals, if this is still out of your financial reach but you feel like my services would support your current transition, please reach out to me at dagnyrose@theartofrest.me to discuss what feels like a meaningful contribution that will also not put you in a financially straining position.
That being said, all of my work is done on a sliding scale fee so that I can offer services to everyone who is interested in them. If you are able to afford services at the base rate provided (or above!2) please know that you are helping others of different financial backgrounds access my services more readily.
Packages
For the full series— 4, 1-hour 1:1 sessions: $250
Status of outdoor professional work must be verified in some way (guide license, pay stub, outfitter or institution verification).
This includes the full services of the package as described above.
Stress A la carte — 2, 1-hour 1:1 sessions: $150
Status of outdoor professional work must be verified in some way (guide license, pay stub, outfitter or institution verification).
This option is for individuals who might only want to hyper-focus on two aspects of the Shifting Seasonal Sleep package. In choosing this package you must clearly indicate which two areas you’d most like to target for our two sessions together.
Individual Consultations — 1-hour 1:1 sessions: Sliding Scale $40-80
Status of outdoor professional work must be verified in some way (guide license, pay stub, outfitter or institution verification).
If you’re just looking for a one-off way to connect and reset, I have a special outdoor professional sliding scale fee that differs from my regular working fees that will be valid through the end of December. If you choose to work with me beyond this 4-series package, this is also the rate I will be working at with proof of outdoor professional work.
